Nucleation and crystallisation in xerogel induced and probed by Cr

چکیده
Nucleation and crystallization from xerogels of the system Si02-ZnOA1203 are induced and probed by Cr. Besides the traditional techniques, such as X-ray diffraction, SAXS and TEM, ESR and optical techniques especially laser spectroscopy are employed for the investigation of the structural evolution during thermal treatments of these xerogels. Cr is served not only as a structure probe but also a nucleating agent. The devitrification of the system is found to be essentially initiated by the presence of traces of chromium.

The Non-Classical Nucleation of Crystals: Microscopic Mechanisms and Applications to Molecular Crystals, Ice and Calcium Carbonate
Crystals form via nucleation followed by growth. Often nucleation data is interpreted using the classical theory of nucleation, which is essentially a simple theory for the nucleation of a fluid phase. I characterise this classical theory as making six assumptions; I discuss each assumption in turn. I then review experiments and simulations that find nucleation behaviour that cannot be describe...
متن کاملThe microscopic origin of the extreme glass-forming ability of Albite and B2O3
Understanding the conditions that favour crystallisation and vitrification has been a longstanding scientific endeavour. Here we demonstrate that the extremely high glass-forming ability of unseeded supercooled Na2O·Al2O3·6SiO2 (Albite) and B2O3-known for decades as "crystallisation anomaly"-is caused by insufficient crystal nucleation. The predicted temperatures of the maximum homogeneous nucl...
متن کاملAn Investigation of the Effects of Self-Assembled Monolayers on Protein Crystallisation
Most protein crystallisation begins from heterogeneous nucleation; in practice, crystallisation typically occurs in the presence of a solid surface in the solution. The solid surface provides a nucleation site such that the energy barrier for nucleation is lower on the surface than in the bulk solution. Different types of solid surfaces exhibit different surface energies, and the nucleation bar...
متن کاملMethods for separating nucleation and growth in protein crystallisation.
The availability of high-quality crystals is crucial to the structure determination of proteins by X-ray diffraction. With the advent of structural genomics the pressure to produce crystals is greater than ever before. Finding favourable conditions for crystallisation is usually achieved by screening of the protein solution with numerous crystallising agents. Optimisation of the crystallisation...
متن کاملExperimental observations and numerical modelling of diffusion-driven crystallisation processes.
This paper reports experimental results and modelling on the crystallisation processes induced by counter diffusion method of a precipitant agent in a lysozyme protein solution. Comparison between experimental observations and numerical simulations in the presence of convection and sedimentation and without them (suppressed using gel) provides a validation of the model. Different values of the ...
